How to Decorate and Brighten Up an Ordinary Caravan Awning

Posted on: 29 July 2017

If you're a caravan owner, adding an awning when you're using the caravan adds a whole new area, giving you more space to relax in and enjoy your holidays. It's also extremely useful if you've taken friends or extra family members along with you and you need a quick expansion.

The trouble with awnings, though, is that they can look a bit plain. Many caravan owners spend time and money making the inside and outside of the caravan itself look great, but then they don't do the same for the awning. Here are some simple tips to decorate your caravan awning and make it more homely:

Decorate the outside

When you got your awning, it most likely came with a plain canvas, perhaps in a dark colour. That's perfectly practical, but it can easily be livened up with a few accessories.

Try adding some bunting in a cheerful colour, which you can either buy or make yourself from a fabric you like. Be careful not to pierce the canvas when you attach the bunting. You could also use things like flags and small windmills for decorations.

Swap the ground sheet for carpet

A canvas ground sheet separates the inside of your awning from the bare earth, but it's not the nicest thing to have as a floor. You can buy carpets specially made for caravan awnings, with eyelets for attaching them in place. They come in various colours and patterns to liven up your interior, and they're comfortable and warm underfoot. A carpet will really add a touch of luxury to your awning.

Buy some decorative pegs

Pegs are a necessary part of keeping an awning in place, but they're also a chance to add more decoration. Next to the dull, ordinary ones, you'll sometimes find pegs decorated with flowers and other cheerful additions. You could also make your own decorations to brighten up your pegs.

Alternatively, you can get light-up pegs or lights to fit on top of existing pegs. These are not only decorative but practical, helping to prevent night-time trips and falls.

Add some lighting

Simple fairy lights really add warmth to an awning, and battery-powered ones are available if you don't want or aren't able to connect them up to a power source. You can also get fake candles with flickering LEDs, which are a safe way to have a bit of romantic candlelight in the evening. Use them with various candle holders to really jazz up the awning.
